Expensive Baby Products That Are Actually Worth It, From a Mom of Two

I’m a big believer that you need less baby gear than the internet makes you think you do. There are so many products marketed as “must-haves” when, realistically, you can get through the baby stage without most of them.

That said, there are a few expensive baby products that I think are genuinely worth the money.

After two kids, my definition of “worth it” is pretty simple: Does it make my life noticeably easier? Do I use it enough that the cost per use makes sense? Can it last through more than one child? If I can eventually resell it and get some money back, even better, but that’s more of a bonus than a deciding factor.

These are the baby products I would personally splurge on again.

UPPAbaby Vista Stroller

Best for: Families planning for more than one child, frequent walkers, and anyone who needs lots of stroller storage

The UPPAbaby Vista is expensive, but whether it’s worth it really depends on your lifestyle. If you think you’ll have more than one child, I think it can absolutely be worth the investment because it grows with your family and can convert from a single to a double stroller.

I also walk a lot and I live somewhere where I can walk to places like the grocery store. The Vista gets used constantly, and the huge basket underneath is one of those features I didn’t realize I would appreciate as much as I do. I can load groceries, diaper bags, baby gear, and everything else underneath it.

This is a good example of why I think cost per use matters so much with baby products. If your stroller is something you’ll use every single day for years and potentially with multiple children, spending more on the right one can make sense. And eventually, you may be able to resell it and recoup some of the cost.

Doona Car Seat & Stroller

Best for: Convenience, travel, Ubers and taxis, and parents constantly getting in and out of the car

I truly think the Doona is a game changer.

For the first year, it can serve as your infant car seat while also giving you the convenience of a stroller. Instead of taking your baby out of the car seat or pulling a separate stroller out of the trunk every time you run into a store, you can simply unfold the wheels and go.

It’s also one of my favorite baby travel products. It can be used on an airplane when installed according to the manufacturer and airline requirements, and having your car seat and stroller combined into one product makes Ubers and taxis significantly easier. You don’t have to travel with a separate infant car seat and stroller.

The two complaints I hear most often are that the Doona is heavy and doesn’t have much storage. Those are fair, but neither would stop me from buying it again. I use the Doona essentials bag and storage bag when I need extra room while traveling, and honestly, having limited storage can help keep you from bringing way more than you actually need.

You will eventually need another car seat once your baby outgrows the Doona, but for that first stage, I think the convenience is absolutely worth it.

SNOO Smart Sleeper

Best for: Parents willing to splurge on something that can make the newborn sleep stage a little easier

Full transparency: I didn’t actually buy our SNOO. My sister bought one and let me borrow it, and I’ve now used the same SNOO with both of my kids.

My babies have loved the movement, especially when they start stirring in the middle of the night and the SNOO can help soothe them back down. But one of my favorite things about it is actually the swaddle system. I loved having my baby securely positioned in the SNOO sleep sack according to the product instructions.

We’ve even brought ours with us on road trips to my parents’ house and Airbnbs. It’s definitely heavy, but we’ve found it worth bringing when we're traveling by car.

Would I tell everyone they need to buy a brand-new SNOO? No. This is a perfect product to borrow from a friend or family member, buy secondhand if appropriate, or rent directly if you don't want to commit to the full purchase price. If you do buy one, resale value can also help offset some of the expense later.

BabyBjörn Bouncer

Best for: A comfortable place to put baby when you need your hands free

Both of my kids have been obsessed with the BabyBjörn bouncer, which is why this is one of those products where the cost per use has absolutely justified the price for us.

It gives me a comfortable place to put the baby when I need to be hands-free, and we use it constantly. As they get older, you can add the activity bar, and it’s so cute watching them go from barely noticing it to actually reaching, playing and interacting with the toys as they develop.

Another very important feature after two babies: the fabric cover is washable. We have had multiple blowouts in this thing. I throw the cover in the wash, let it air dry, and it comes out looking great.

One important note: bouncers are not safe sleep spaces. If your baby falls asleep in a bouncer, follow current safe-sleep guidance and move them to an approved sleep surface.

Baby Brezza Formula Pro

Best for: Formula-feeding families who value convenience, especially during nighttime feeds

Do you need a machine to make a bottle for you? Absolutely not.

Do I think the Baby Brezza Formula Pro is worth it? Absolutely.

This is purely a convenience splurge, but convenience feels very valuable when you’re standing in the kitchen exhausted in the middle of the night. Instead of measuring formula, dealing with scoops and making a mess, you press a button and have a bottle ready.

You can also adjust the temperature, which is great if your baby prefers a warmer bottle. It removes several little steps from something you might be doing over and over again every single day.

This is exactly the type of baby product I mean when I talk about cost per use. It isn't essential, but if you formula feed and use it multiple times a day for months, the convenience can make the price feel much more reasonable.

Nanit Baby Monitor

Best for: Parents who want to monitor their baby from their phone and families who travel

One of my favorite things about the Nanit is that it connects to an app on your phone, which means you can check on your baby even when you’re not standing in your house staring at a traditional monitor.

Yes, this also means you may find yourself on date night checking to see if your baby is sleeping when you are supposed to be enjoying dinner. Guilty.

Depending on your Nanit setup and plan, there are also sleep insights and compatible breathing-monitoring features. I wouldn't buy it solely for all the extra data, but I love having those options available.

We also use the travel stand, which is lightweight and easy to pack. You do need to consider Wi-Fi connectivity when traveling, so I always recommend checking your setup before relying on it at a hotel or Airbnb.

Dagne Dover Diaper Bag Backpack

Best for: Parents who want one diaper bag that both partners will actually carry

This is something I don’t think people consider enough when choosing a diaper bag: your partner should like it too.

You want both parents grabbing the diaper bag, packing it and carrying it. I love the Dagne Dover backpack because it doesn’t scream diaper bag. My husband will happily wear it, and when we travel, he can even throw his laptop inside along with the diapers, wipes, extra outfits and everything else we need for the kids.

I strongly prefer a backpack-style diaper bag because being hands-free is so important when you’re carrying a baby, pushing a stroller or navigating an airport. The Dagne Dover also has a luggage sleeve so you can slide it onto a roller bag while traveling, plus a changing mat and organizational pouches.

Most importantly, ours has lasted. I’ve had it for years, we’ve traveled extensively with it, and it still looks great. When I think about cost per use, this is easily one of the baby products that has earned its price in our family.

So, Are Expensive Baby Products Worth It?

Sometimes. But a high price tag definitely doesn’t mean something belongs on your registry.

Before splurging on baby gear, I would think about your actual lifestyle rather than what an influencer, registry checklist, or friend tells you that you “need.” Do you walk everywhere? Travel frequently? Plan to have multiple kids? Formula feed? Need something that can withstand daily use for several years?

The products worth spending more on are the ones that solve a real problem for your family.

For me, the best expensive baby products are the ones I use constantly, make everyday life easier, and can potentially last through multiple kids. I’d rather spend more on a handful of products that meet those criteria and skip a dozen trendy baby products that will barely get used.

Is the Doona worth the money?

I think the Doona is especially worth considering if you travel frequently or value the convenience of having an infant car seat that converts into a stroller. I've found it especially useful for airplanes, taxis, Ubers and quick errands.

Is the SNOO worth buying?

The SNOO has worked really well for my family, but buying one brand new isn't your only option. We borrowed ours from my sister and have used it with both of my kids. Renting or borrowing one can be a great way to get the benefits without paying the full purchase price.

How should I decide where to splurge on my baby registry?

Think about cost per use. Instead of asking whether a product is popular, ask how often you personally expect to use it, whether it solves a real problem in your daily life, and whether it could potentially last through more than one child.
